Originally dubbed Willow Springs, Raton served as a watering spot for travelers coming over arduous Raton Pass, the biggest challenge on the Mountain Branch of the Santa Fe Trail. When the railroad came through in 1879, the town boomed. Several blocks of well-preserved 19th century buildings make First Street, or as it was then known, Railroad Avenue, worth a leisurely exploration.
