Ban on Ground Audible Fireworks
Due to the present dry conditions, the City has banned ground audible devices for a period of at least thirty days.
The City of Raton has been identified as a Community at Risk by New Mexico State Forestry, because current dry conditions are ripe for extensive potential property damage from fireworks. The Raton Fire Department reponds to fires within the City and outside the City in addition to operation of the Ambulance, and fires induced by fireworks needlessly divert valuable equipment and manpower each year.
- A thirty day (30) ban will be imposed on the sale and use of fireworks classified as gound audible devices: chasers and firecrackers.
- Fourth of July public displays sponsored by local government, civic organizations or other organizations will be a better way to celebrate as they should be of such composition, character and so located, discharged or fired as to not be hazardous or endanger life or property.
- This resolution shall be effective for thirty (30) days and the governing body may issue succeeding resolutions if extreme or severe drought conditions warrant.
The resoluton was approved by the Raton City Commission on May 12, 2009.
Also, the City prohibits the use of certain fireworks by ordinance. For more information, please see our fireworks ordinance.
